Do you like New England Boiled Dinner….the traditional New England Boiled Dinner with the famous corned beef and cabbage prepared in the United States on St. Patrick’s Day?

 For other times during the year, here is a variation I know. It is to replace hot dogs for the corned beef! 

My Mom did this once in a while! It was a recipe that went around in Rhode Island when I was growing up.   I know some people might cringe at this and say hot dogs in a boiled dinner? in a broth? Really, you are just replacing the corned beef, or the sausage for hot dogs and if you like hot dogs, you will enjoy this change!    I have made it this way many times for years and we love it! 

On my website I have a Cabbage and Kielbasa Soup that is another variation of the New England Boiled Dinner. It is really delicious if you like kielbasa sausage.

 Try using hot dogs!  You can even put them in frozen!  You will love the flavor they absorb!!   

Cutting the potatoes and onions thickens the soup broth a little more instead of keeping them whole, and they still stay intact.  I know some people cut up the hot dogs and vegetables into chunks before adding them into the pot.  

It only takes a few minutes to prep the vegetables, so this is a super-fast recipe! 

There are times I vary the vegetables or add different ones, like Brussel sprouts or parsnips. One picture has added parsnips.

Boiled Dinner with Hot Dogs!

Made just like a New England Boiled Dinner with Corned Beef or with Sausage, but uses Hot Dogs! We like the delicious flavor the hot dogs take on in this dish A different way to eat hot dogs! It is delish!

Ingredients

  • 16 cups water
  • ½ head cabbage small
  • 3 potatoes cut in half
  • 4 onions cut in half
  • 5 carrots whole or cut in half
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 5 peppercorns
  • 8 hotdogs

Instructions

  • Put the water in a large soup pot.
  • Stir in the salt, pepper, olive oil, bay leaves and peppercorns, then add in the vegetables and hot dogs.
  • Bring the water to a boil, reduce the heat to medium low and cook it at a low boil for 40-45 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender.

EXTRA TIP:

VEGETABLES:   Vary the vegetables.  Brussel sprouts or parsnips are good with this too. 
AMOUNTS:  Vary the amounts of vegetables and hot dogs!  Add more or less of what you like! 
SERVINGS:  The amount of servings depends on how large your portions are! Most of the times it is with one hot dog, sometimes two!  Great served with crusty bread!
