rice crispie squares

“Years ago Kellogg’s came out with their Rice Krispie Treats recipe on the back of the box and now they are a classic!    I don’t know about you, but I found out a long time ago that if you use a whole stick of butter  instead of just the 3 tablespoons it says in the recipe on the box, the squares come out softer and very buttery!     They are so much better!

One time before I had the recipe committed to memory I asked my dear neighbor Susan if she knew it.  She goes, oh just melt a stick of butter with some marshmallows and pour in some cereal!  That is what got me started using one stick!   Thanks, Susan!   They are so good!   When I followed the original recipe afterwards,  I missed that soft and buttery taste!    You also have to use the best and freshest cereal for these to come out right.  No stale cereal or they come out tasting stale!

These rice krispie treats pictured are decorated for autumn but they make a great addition to any holiday dessert table just by changing the candied sprinkles.  If you don’t mind a little more work, they are fun to cut into holiday shapes. I have seen so many variations with different cereals and additions.

And one more thing –  these are not just for the little ones! I see a lot of adults reaching for these!

Cut them into 24 squares rather than 12.   If you can eat just one square, it is only 48 calories or 2 Weight Watcher Points.    I like that!      Enjoy!”

Servings: 12

INGREDIENTS:

6 cups rice krispie cereal ( I prefer Kellogg’s)
1/2 cup butter
1 (10 ounces) package marshmallows (about 40)  or 4 cups miniature marshmallows or 1 (7 ounces) jar marshmallow crème.

DIRECTIONS:

1. Butter or spray a 13 x 9 x 2 inch pan.
2. In a large pan, melt the butter over medium heat.
3. Add the marshmallows and stir until they are all melted and the mixture is creamy.
4. Add the cereal and mix well.
5. Quickly spread into the prepared pan.
6. Add candied sprinkles on top if you wish.

Thanks, Diane! The microwave is good… I never tried it though. That pan on the stove takes some work to clean afterwards! So glad Jared is able to have these treats his way! Blessings and hugs back to you !!

Oh, Angie these are always so good and are soooo easy to make! I do the butter and the marshmallows in the microwave. Just watch it as it puffs up a lot and you don’t want to burn them, just melt them! Great idea with the sprinkles on top! Our Grandson Jared, the one with all the food allergies, loves this as his cake for his birthday. Wendy buys a special butter that is not really butter for him but it cooks and tastes like the real thing! Wishing you and Bill a Wonderfully Blessed and Happy Thanksgiving this week. I am so thankful for friends who are friends forever, even when distance takes us apart. Love you both. Blessings and hugs, Diane
